Hydrostatic Level Sensors
Hydrostatic Level Sensors are an excellent and cost effective way of measuring the liquid level inside a tank.
At the bottom of a tank or storage vessel the amount of pressure exerted by the liquid contained within the tank is at its greatest. As the liquid level increases, the pressure at the bottom of the tank increases proportionally. By measuring the amount of pressure exerted at the bottom of the tank, we can accurately calculate the level of liquid contained within the tank.
This measurement technique is called Hydrostatic level measurement and requires a sensor to be located at the base of a tank or vessel with a pressure sensitive device exposed to the liquid. This is normally via a specially machined diaphragm which very precisely calculates the changes in pressure.
There are two ways of ensuring that a hydrostatic level sensor is correctly located at the bottom of a tank. Either by suspending it from a wire and allowing it to sink to the bottom, called a suspended hydrostatic level sensor, or by fabricated boss or threaded fitting at the bottom of the tank and screwing in an insertion hydrostatic level sensor.
Each of the hydrostatic level sensors are 2 Wire devices, which means that the 2 wires which power the device, are the same two wires which transmit an industry standard 4-20mA signal, proportional to the measured level. This can be connected directly to a 4-20mA controller, a PLC or Data Logger.
Insertion Hydrostatic Level Sensors
Our insertion hydrostatic level sensor range are all fitted with a BSP thread allowing the sensors to be directly screwed into the bottom of a tank.
The insertion hydrostatic level sensors are manufactured in 316 stainless steel with either a ceramic diaphragm or a stainless steel diaphragm and range from 0 - 0.1 Bar up to 0 - 10 Bar pressure.
Suspended Hydrostatic Level Sensor
The suspended hydrostatic level sensor range are designed to be lowered into tanks and vessels to provide continuous level measurements.
One advantage of the suspended hydrostatic level sensor is that they are available manufactured in 316 stainless steel and more chemically resistant materials. Our ALMK809 is a chemically resistant Level Transmitter, available in both PolyPropylene and PVDF for use in concentrated chemicals.
The Suspended Hydrostatic Level Sensors use a specially vented PVC cable which is used to lower the transmitters into place. The length needs to ensure that the level sensors can be lowered to the base of the tank for precision measurements.
The available ranges on our stainless steel hydrostatic level transmitter are from 0 - 1.6 meters up to 0 - 100 metres for the PVDF / PP bodied ALMK809. The stainless steel bodied AIML has a range of 0 - 0.5 metres up to 0 - 200 metres.
Please note, the SG of the liquid being measured needs to be accounted for when ordering any of the hydrostatic level sensors.
