Dosing Pump Foot Valves

To ensure that a chemical dosing pump delivers a precise amount of chemical reagent consistently, one important consideration is to ensure that the dosing pump is primed.

A dosing pump is primed when the liquid end, (the head of the dosing pump), is filled with chemical.  As liquid is non compressible, the movement of the diaphragm forces the liquid out through the dosing tubing.  The alternative is that the dosing pump needs to compress air, (a compressible fluid), in order to draw the chemical into the pump head before it is discharged through the dosing tubing.

There are a number of ways of priming a dosing pump, depending upon the installation type.

For dosing pumps that are located at the bottom of the chemical container, this is called flooded suction and ensures that gravity will fill the dosing pump head.  This means that the pump is always primed and ready for operation.

Where the chemical tank is mounted lower than the dosing pump, or the dosing pump has to draw the chemical into it's head via suction, then installing a foot valve helps to ensure that a dosing pump maintains it's prime, once achieved.

Types of Foot Valve

There are two main types of foot valve.  A foot valve which is attached to a rigid piece of pipe and contains a low level float switch is known as a suction lance.  These are reasonably sophisticated devices which include a non return valve as well as the low level cut off.  They are normally used where the chemical container has to be changed with a fair level of frequency or where a low level cut off or indicator is required.

A foot valve that is attached to the suction tubing of a dosing pump, using a compression fitting and submerged into a chemical container, are the foot valve types that are included in this section.

Foot Valve & Strainer Assembly

Each foot valve comprises of a non-return valve and a strainer assembly.  The strainer assembly is a filter layer which is designed to prevent solid or organic matter being drawn into the dosing pump and causing damage or blockages to the internal parts.  These are not designed to be used as a filtration device and are present to prevent damage from occurring to the dosing pump itself.

The second part of the foot valve is a non-return valve which is located inside the foot valve assembly.  This means that when the chemical is drawn up the suction line of the dosing pump, it cannot flow back down the suction line, causing the pump to lose its prime.

As a simple device, a foot valve and strainer assembly helps to ensure that chemical dosing pumps do not lose their prime during normal operation.  Manufactured in chemically resistant material with a choice of valve and seal materials to ensure compatibility, even with concentrated chemical reagents.
