pH Electrode Range

There is a secret for the accurate measurement of pH which is the use of a good pH electrode.

Firstly - there are a number of different terms used for a device which is used to measure pH. We break these down as follows:-

pH Sensor

We use this term to broadly cover any type of device used to measure pH.

pH Probe

We reserve the term pH probe to mean our industrial housed pH sensors — if you're looking for either a submersion or inline type of pH sensor then please visit the pH probe section.

pH Electrode

We reserve this term to mean a glass bodied pH sensor. These are often referred to as laboratory pH electrodes, or just pH electrodes and that's the term we use to differentiate the two types of sensor.

Now that we have identified that we're using a pH electrode as our pH sensor, the next part is selecting the right pH electrode. There is a bewildering choice of pH electrodes, where a differing or more aggressive application has resulted in a technical improvement on a basic pH electrode.

If we start with a glass bodied pH electrode as our standard base, we can then work out the different elements that are engineered for application specific pH measurement.

pH electrode reference

This is the porous material that allows the reference material inside the electrode to be in contact with the solution that we're measuring.

There are a number of types of reference junction for pH electrodes. Our standard reference is a circular reference that runs around the outside of the glass bulb. This type of reference is called a peripheric or annular junction. The other types available are separate reference junctions, which are very old fashioned, or a wick type reference junction.

An annular reference is porous; it doesn't block, has an even flow of reference material and is our preferred method of delivery of the reference material.

A wick type reference offers a cost saving over an annular reference and are perfectly acceptable in applications where the solution being measured won't block the wick junction.

pH electrode junction

A standard electrode will have a single junction allowing the reference material to be in contact with the solution. This is perfect for most applications as the response time is very quick, meaning any change to the pH measurement is accurately represented on a high quality pH controller.

The disadvantage is that some applications and some chemicals will result in electrode poisoning.

This is where the solution being measured reacts with the reference material (KCl solution derivative or polymer) or the Ag-AgCL (Silver-Silver-Chloride) electrode.

Using a double junction we have a barrier between the Ag-AgCl and the KCl. If you have this problem we would recommend looking at a double junction pH electrode.

Note - An alternative option is to use an electrode which has a calomel reference. Contact us for more information on this option.

pH electrode reference material

The reference material inside the pH electrode can vary too. The solutions we use are proprietary and we have a standard gel which is used for temperatures up to 60ºC and then high temperature gels which have been tested to 120ºC.

pH electrode glass, connectors and low conductivity

There are other elements affecting the ability of a pH electrode to work in some environments, and if you'd like to discuss pH electrodes in more detail please get in touch - we do love a good chat about pH electrodes!

Some other areas for consideration include the glass type. We have 5 different types of glass that we use; some specifically for measuring changes in pH value, others to prevent the leaching of materials in low conductivity solutions.

The body material is also a consideration - we standardise on glass, but we do offer epoxy bodied electrodes where cost is a concern.

Finally one key consideration is the connection type. We prefer to use a BNC connector on our electrodes, but we can manufacture tagged ends, spade types, and most electrode connection types. If in doubt - just get in touch!
