Turbidity Sensor

Turbidity sensors are designed to be permanently installed into a process to give continual or online turbidity measurements. They are normally available for a range of mounting options with the most common types available as:-

  • Dip Mounting or submersion turbidity sensors
  • Inline mounting or flow line turbidity sensors
  • Sample line mounting turbidity sensors.

While the turbidity sensors can be mounted in a number of different ways, the way in which the turbidity sensors monitor the turbidity values is standardised across our range. All of our turbidity sensors subscribe to the methodology set out in ISO 7027 – EN 27027 and use back scattering light technology at 90° to measure the turbidity value.

The light is emitted at a fixed wavelength in the infrared spectrum which ensures that the turbidity measurement is not affected by the colour of the solution it is measuring.

The standard for measuring Turbidity in the United States a slightly different methodology is used, which is in accordance with United States Environmental Protection Agency regulation USEPA 180.1 and we're able to turbidity sensors in accordance with US EPA 180.1.

Turbidity Sensor Measurements

As our Turbidity sensors are ISO 7027 – EN 27027 compliant they output the measured turbidity in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) and the signal is connected to a turbidity controller to give a displayed value of the turbidity as well as relay control, 4-20mA current outputs and a number of other control options.

If you wish to simply measure the turbidity and output a 4-20mA corresponding to the measured Turbidity; then we recommend our Turbidity Transmitters which include integrated electronics to give an isolated 4-20mA output signal. The turbidity transmitters use the same sensor technology as our Turbidity Sensors and also correspond to ISO 7027 – EN 27027. (We also offer high and low range sensors with and output in FTU.)

Turbidity Sensor Maintenance

The turbidity sensors use sophisticated circuitry and precision electronics to ensure that the turbidity value is measured precisely. This involves using a light source, photo-receptor and an acrylic lens.

With the exception of period calibration and cleaning of the lens, which can be reduced by using the auto-clean system which is supplied as standard on our submersible turbidity sensors, there is very little preventative maintenance, period calibration or human interaction with the device required.

TU810-910

Inline Turbidity Sensor

inline turbidity sensor tu810 910

The TU810 is a Turbidity Sensor with integrated electronics, designed to be mounted directly into a pipe or into a sample line (pictured above), to give continuous or online turbidity measurements.

The TU810 uses an infrared light emitting source and a 90° photoreceptor to measure back scattering in accordance with ISO 7027 – EN 27027. The TU810 is designed to IP68 and is manufactured in PVC.

Inline Turbidity Sensor Introduction

The TU810 is designed to work in combination with our Turbidity Controller TU7685 - which amplifies the signal to give a visual indication of the measured turbidity value, in addition to displaying the measured turbidity value, the TU7685 includes a wide array of control options, a 4-20mA output and alarm relays.

The TU810 is designed to be mounted into a flow sensor for measurements directly in pipes. Alternatively, the TU810 can be mounted into our TU910 sample line sensor holder, this takes an incoming line from the pipework into the flow cell, which then discharges to drain. The sample line holder has flow regulating valves and is designed specifically to prevent bubbles from blinding or adversely affecting the sensor.

Inline Turbidity Sensor - NTU Ranges

The TU810 is designed for water quality analysis and is suitable for drinking water applications; raw water applications and water treatment applications. The ranges available with the TU810 are as follows:-

Please note Nephelometric Turbidity Units shows as NTU

Turbidity RangeTurbidity Resolution
0 - 4.000 NTU 0.001 NTU
0 - 40.00 NTU 0.01 NTU
0 - 400.0 NTU 0.1 NTU
0 - 4000 NTU 1 NTU

The TU810 is easily configurable with the Turbidity Controller TU7685.  By accessing the configuration menu's in the TU7685, the TU810 turbidity sensor can be re-ranged as well as calibrated.  The TU810 is a sophisticated sensor, able to offer a reading as low as 0.001 NTU through to 4000 NTU, all from the same optical sensor.

Inline Turbidity Sensor Installation

The TU810 is designed to be mounted either inline directly into pipework using a locking nut, or installation into a sample line cell.  This is where a secondary line runs from the primary pipework, through the sample line flow cell, and then the sample discharges to a drain.

Turbidity measurements in very clean water, such as drinking water, are susceptible to false positives from bubbles in the measured solution. As bubbles are caused by water discharging to atmospheric pressure, the flow cell TU910 includes a tightening tap to allow the sample flow cell to remain pressurised and so prevent bubbles affecting the measurement.

When installed directly into pipework or the sample cell, the TU810 is designed to operate to pressures of up to 6 bar.  In addition, using the infrared spectrum, the TU810 is not affected by the colour of the measured solution and within pipework should not be affected by bright light blinding the photoreceptor.

Inline Turbidity Sensor Features & Benefits

The TU810 is a precision turbidity sensor which is accurate across a very wide range of turbidity measurements.  Fully scaleable from the companion TU7685 Turbidity Controller, the TU810 can measure from as low as 0.001 NTU, all the way up to 4000 NTU.

Designed to be permanently mounted into pipework or as part of a sample line using our TU910 flow cell, the TU810 can provide continuous turbidity readings, and provides measurements which can be controlled from the TU7685 controller.

The PVC body and IP68 rating allow the cell to be permanently mounted into pipework where the pressure does not exceed 6 Bar, and requires minimal maintenance.

The turbidity measurements follow the standard nephelometric back scattering methodology (ISO 7027 - EN27027) and the infra-red light is not affected by the colour of the sample.

TU8182

Submersible Turbidity Sensor

Submersible Turbidity Sensor TU8182

The TU8182 is a Turbidity Sensor designed to be screwed into a riser tube for submersion into streams, weirs, pits, tanks or other unpressurised vessels.

The TU8182 works with our TU7685 Turbidity Controller, which amplifies the signal from the sensor and provides a visual indication of the turbidity measurement as well offering numerous control and transmission options.  The TU7685 can also control the auto-clean relay for use with the auto-clean nozzle on the TU8182.

The TU8182 uses an infrared light emitting source and a 90° photo-receptor to measure back scattering in accordance with ISO 7027EN 27027 regulations.

Manufactured in PVC with IP68 rating, the TU8182 is designed to be submersed into an open vessel, stream or pit to give continuous turbidity measurements.

Submersible Turbidity Sensor - NTU Ranges

The TU8182 is designed for water quality analysis and is suitable for drinking water applications, raw water applications and water and effluent treatment monitoring applications. The ranges available with the TU8182 are as follows:-

Please note Nephelometric Turbidity Units shows as NTU.

Turbidity RangeTurbidity Resolution
0 - 4.000 NTU 0.001 NTU
0 - 40.00 NTU 0.01 NTU
0 - 400.0 NTU 0.1 NTU
0 - 4000 NTU 1 NTU

The TU8182 is easily configurable with the TU7685 Turbidity Controller.  By accessing the configuration menu's in the TU7685, the TU8182 turbidity sensor can be rearranged as well as calibrated.  The TU8182 is a sophisticated sensor, able to offer a reading as low as 0.001 NTU through to 4000 NTU, all from the same optical sensor.

Submersion Turbidity Sensor

The TU8182 has a 2" thread at the rear of the device to allow it to be screwed into a riser tube for continuous or online turbidity measurements.  (See the picture above.)

The TU8182 is designed to continuously monitor the turbidity in a stream or tank and is used in applications such as water treatment monitoring, raw water monitoring and other water quality analysis in industrial or municipal environments.

In addition to the rear mounting thread, the TU8182 has an optional auto-clean nozzle which can be connected to a suitable compressed air system via a 1/4" x 3/8" hose connection. The Auto-clean system is triggered by the TU7685 Turbidity Controller.

When the auto-clean system is in use, the TU7685 controller enters into a freeze & hold mode. This means that while the TU8182 sensor is being cleaned, the value is held on the screen of the TU7685 and any control relays or outputs from the TU7685 are held. This means that no devices can be switched on or be affected by the TU7685 during the cleaning procedure.  The main reason for this is the potential for air bubbles to cause a false reading and in turn triggering any process or control devices.

The auto-clean system uses the compressed air to remove any contaminating agent or detritus from interfering with the lens of the turbidity sensor, so reducing the requirement for human involvement in preventative maintenance and prolonging the continuous operation.

The auto-clean air-nozzle is rated for use with a maximum air pressure of 3 Bar.

Submersible Turbidity Sensor Features & Benefits

The TU8182 is a precision turbidity sensor which is accurate across a very wide range of turbidity measurements.  Fully scaleable from the companion TU7685 Turbidity Controller, the TU8182 can measure from as low as 0.001 NTU, all the way up to 4000 NTU.

Designed to be permanently mounted into the flow of a weir, stream or into an open tank, to provide continuous turbidity readings, and measurements which can be controlled from the TU7685 controller.
